Weight Loss ProgramsOur society is calorie-rich and nutrient-poor, causing us to eat and eat and never get what we need to thrive. Currently more than half the adult population is considered overweight or obese. Poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles are two of the main culprits for weight gain. The goal for many is a Weight Loss Program. According to a 1992 survey from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an estimated 33-40 percent of women and 24 percent of men were dieting in the United States. This is both good and bad news. On the plus side (no pun intended), it is important for people with excess weight to lose the pounds for health reasons. It is widely know that excess weight increases your risk of developing several chronic health conditions, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. An if you carry your weight around your abdomen, you are at risk for all of the abovementioned conditions plus you are at an increased risk for metabolic syndrome that is associated with glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. This news is bad because it highlights the fact that Americans are gaining and holding onto excess weight - and even obesity-in record numbers. But in spite of countless media reports, Kat James, author of The Truth About Beauty maintains that focusing on the so-called "obesity epidemic" is misplaced. Instead she recommends exploring underlying health challenges - such as how you metabolize sugar as well as a handful of other health issues - that strongly impact your shape and your relationship with food. Everyone's exact combination of health issues is different, and so are their specific nutritional needs and combination of chemistry-balancing supplements. but several issues are so universal, particularly among Americans, that they deserve a more in-depth discussion. These include blood sugar and insulin imbalances, toxicity, excessive stress and Cortisol (which can lead to fat accumulation in the belly), an after the age of 35 - low DHEA levels. Thyroid deficiency (which slows metabolism and can cause dry hair and skin) and estrogen overload (which can predispose you to a a pear shape) are also very common issues that can be improved or resolved with supplements. Take this quick test to see into what category your weight issues fall, and what you can do about it.
